In order to raise funds for their college, the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy – Local Student Council (CSSP-LSC) held its first ever recycled lantern parade and competition, December 2, Monday.
More than 20 contending lanterns were paraded around the campus by the CSSP students from different sections and courses. Winners will be determined based on the given rule that a lantern must be made of recycled materials, and also through the number of votes. Each vote costs 1.00php.

Dr. Marwin M. Dela Cruz, the dean of CSSP, explained that this is the college’s way of producing funds to be used for their expenses and other projects. Prior to that, CSSP did not collect any extra amount from their students during the enrollment period.
“Hindi kami nagpapakolekta sa enrollment dito sa CSSP, two semesters na,” Dela Cruz elaborated. “We don’t have to ask for 50 pesos or so ‘pag nag-enroll and they don’t even know what’s the reason, eh dito, piso lang isang pirma, yet you can still raise funds.”
Dela Cruz also said that the purpose of making the lanterns by using recycled materials is to unleash the students’ creativity.
“Syempre environmental na [rin] ang concern ngayon,” said Dela Cruz. “Ipinakikita rito ang creativity at para you don’t also have to spend much.”
One of the participating recycled lanterns was made by Arvin Joso, Kathleen Lapid and Aila Wala-Wala from Bachelor of Public Administration (BPA) 1-B, which only consisted plastic bottles and caps, and old CDs.
“Isang araw lang po naming ‘yan ginawa,” said Lapid. “At kaya po ganyan kasi limited lang ang time at budget, at para maipakita naming na recycled po siya talaga.”
Voting ends on Friday, December 6.
